Me on Al Jazeera

Posted by Mary on 15/05/2007 at 9:28

No, this isn't a joke. Since last summer I've been submitting commentary to a program on Aljazeera English called The Listening Post. I knew that my comments were being broadcast but I had never seen the program until today when one of the show's producers very nicely sent me a link. The show is about the Iraqi government stopping its reporting of civilian casualties. My comment is at the end, around the 3:10 minute mark.

Photos of the Launch of Chile Primero

On Saturday I went to the launch of the political movement (soon to be political party) called Chile Primero and took lots of photos. Here are my favorites. The others are in a set in my Flickr account.

What is the LEAST effective form of activism?

Posted by Mary on 11/05/2007 at 16:35

I'm currently translating Bligoo from Spanish to English. I just finished translating the poll creation instructions, so I thought it was as good time as any to make my first Friday Fun Poll. Take a look at this comic from Slow Poke Comics and then vote for the least effective form of activism: The image “http://www.slowpokecomics.com/strips/leasteffective.gif” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

Results:
  • leaving an angry comment on a blog: 50 % (2 votes)
  • wearing a revolutionary t-shirt: 25 % (1 vote)
  • playing music at a political protest: 0 %
  • making a dramatic spectical where no one is there to witness it: 25 % (1 vote)

Total votes: 4
This poll is closed. It was available for 100 days, since 11/05/2007 .

Paris Hilton Digital Activism

Posted by Mary on 09/05/2007 at 19:25

I'm about to make a confession that I may come to regret. So far in this blog I've been writing about serious things like social technology and the future of politics. Well, I'm about to break with that tradition and write about something completely different... celebrity gossip!

You may not know this about me (and hopefully you don't) but I love - I mean LOVE - celebrity gossip blogs. I read them every day and they bring me no end of joy and entertainment. There. I said it. There's no going back.

Of course, usually I don't feel the need

Fighting Web Ads , Freeing Culture

Posted by Mary on 08/05/2007 at 19:32

Blogger Ethan Zuckerman says that we should not pay too much attention to innovations just because they are shiny (ie, because of the "oh neat!" factor), but rather because they are "crunchy," that is, because they have lasting and widespread value.

I'm not sure if the innovation I'm about to write about is shiny or crunchy, but I know that I like it. It's called AddArt and, according to the blog Smart Mobs, it's a plug-in for the Mozilla browser that replaces ads in websites with art. It's not ready for download yet, but hopefully it will be soon.

Photos of my consulting job in Nigeria

Posted by Mary on 05/05/2007 at 10:33

At the beginning of April I went to Lagos, Nigeria, to set up an internet monitoring program for the OpenNet Intiative (ONI), a research consortium that documents internet filtering worldwide. The goal of the project was to see whether the Nigerian government was censoring web content during the elections on April 21. Here are a few shots and here is the final report I wrote.

Free Monem international campaign launches today

Posted by Mary on 03/05/2007 at 16:11

On April 15th the blogger Abdel Monem Mahmoud was arrested by Egyptians security forces. He was charged with several crimes, including "belonging to an illegal organization" (the Muslim Brotherhood) and “organizing secret meetings with the aim of disturbing public order.” However, his real crime was challenging the dictatorial regime of Hosni Mubarak by telling the truth about the torture he underwent and condemning the country's unjust military tribunals.

I'll be starting a Spanish-language version of the Free Monem campaign in the next few days, but until then, watch this video (in English) to learm about his case.

When interactive web apps fall into the wrong hands

Posted by Mary on 01/05/2007 at 20:43

Mostly, I love what Java, XML, and their love child AJAX have done for the internet. They turn stade webpages into interactive mobile spaces. However sometimes these innocent, fun, web apps fall into the wrong hands.

What I am referring to is Tiffany's new design-your-own-charm-bracelet-page, www.tiffany.com/charms, which allows you to drag and drop any number of charms (silver, gold, or platinum - your choice) onto a chain and then buy it. Here's my effort. I chose the platinum and gemstone line, natch.
