A Food Fight to End Them All

Posted by Mary on 02/03/2008 at 20:55

Watch this incredibly smart short film, called "Food Fight". It is the history of modern warfare from WWII to the present as re-enacted by food (Japanese are sushi, Americans are hamburgers, etc.). The director, Stefan Nadelman, describes it as a "smorgasbord of aggression" and you'll see why. (The end is particularly effective.) You might have to watch it more than once to successfully identify all the battles, but it's worth the effort.

Take a photo for the Help Fouad Campaign

Posted by Mary on 29/02/2008 at 18:06

Last Friday, Fouad Mourtada was sentenced to 3 years in jail for posting a joke profile of the Moroccan King's brother on Facebook.  But it's not too late to reduce or reverse this ridiculous sentence.  Please take a photo of yourself with a message to Free Fouad.  (Please also write where you are from in the message) then send the photo to helpfouad@gmail.com

Here are some I took here at Harvard:

Prison Blogging: Making Invisible People Visible

Posted by Mary on 29/02/2008 at 12:05

Today I read in the New York Times that 1 in 100 American adults is in prison.  This is the highest incarceration rate in America's history and I believe it is also one of the highest in the world.  This is really shameful, not to mention horrible social policy, given what we know about high recidivism rates and the crimilnalizing effects of being in jail.

Because of the way my mind works, I am always wondering if there is grassroots digital solution to any problem and I am wondering if having inmates blog might be a good idea.

Certainly this

Last Friday, Moroccan computer engineer Fouad Mourtada was sentenced to 3 years in jail for posting a fake profile of Prince Rachid (the King of Morocco's brother).

His sister Amina has set up a web page www.helpfouad.com to push for the decision to be reversed. Part of this effort (more actions to come) is a petition to free Fouad.

1 Million Micro-Donations for Obama

Posted by Mary on 26/02/2008 at 18:27

So Larry Lessig has decided not to run for Congress.  Now all of us socially-progressive geeks can put our full energy into Barack Obama.

Obama has done a great job of drawing his financial support many micro-donations collected online rather than relying on a few welathy donors as Hillary has.  This new and more distributed model of fundraising was first successfully applied by the Howard Dean campaign in 2004 and has big implications.  Ideally, collecting money from thousands of ordinary Americans instrad of a few rich people means that the candidate becomes accountable to the broad public, not a

In Morocco, Facebook is a Crime

Posted by Mary on 24/02/2008 at 20:12

On February 5, computer engineer Fouad Mourtada was blindfolded and taken from his house in Casablanca, Morocco. He was taken to a police station where he was harassed and spat on by local police. Two weeks later, on February 22, he was sentence to three years in prison and a $1350 fine. His crime was creating a fake profile of Prince Moulay Rachid, the King's brother on Facebook.

As Laila Lalami comments on The Nation's web site, "there are fake profiles on Facebook for everyone from Brad Pitt to Mother Teresa, from King Abdullah to Osama bin Laden.

Technology Adoption Now Happening Faster Than Ever

Posted by Mary on 22/02/2008 at 19:54

According to a recent article in The Economist, "technology is spreading to emerging markets faster than it has ever done anywhere."  The World Bank studied how long it took after the initial invention of a new technology for 80% of surveyed countries to  report use.

The result are that adoption rates have decreased dramatically in the past 200 years (see graph). Whereas it took 120 for trains to be adopted in "developing" countries in the 19th century and 60 years for aviation and radios to be adopted in the 20th century, it has taken only 20 years for personal

OhmyNews Journalism School Doubles as Retreat

Posted by Mary on 21/02/2008 at 19:59

The Dutch innovation organization Springwise reports that Korean citizen journalism site OhmyNews is opening a school for citizen journalists. The program will take place in a renovated elementary school located 90 minutes from Seoul. The school is deliberately designed as a retreat, to "give urbanites a rare opportunity to recharge themselves as content creators in the middle of idyllic rural setting".

The purpose of the program is to disseminate the skills of journalism more widely among Koreans, a in keeping with OhmyNews' founder Oh Yeon Ho's mantra that "every citizen is a reporter." While some classes

Teenage Girls are the New Cyber Pioneers

Posted by Mary on 21/02/2008 at 14:13

An article from the New York Times blasts the stereotype that boys are more digitally adept than girls. According to the article, among American teenagers, more girls than boys blog, create their own web sites, work on other people's sites, and create profiles on social networking sites. Let's hope this trend of female digital engagement continues into the activism field.

From the article:

The prototypical computer whiz of popular imagination — pasty, geeky, male — has failed to live up to his reputation.

Research shows that among the youngest Internet users, the primary creators of Web content (blogs, graphics, photographs,
