Help Fouad Campaign Goes Offline and International

Posted by Mary on 04/03/2008 at 15:22

If this had happened 5 years ago, who knows what would have happened. Fouad Mourtada, a young Moroccan posts a joke profile of the King's brother, Moulay Rachid, on Facebook and a few days later the profile is removed from the site. Then, two weeks later, two officials show up at his home, blinfold him, and take him to a secret location where he is interrogated, beaten, and spat upon.

Two weeks after his arrest, on February 22, Fouad was sentenced to 3 years in prison and a fine of over $1000 for "identity fraud of an electronic document."

Five years ago, that would have been the end of the story: one more Moroccan political prisoner, one more victim of an unjust judicial system, one more violation of human rights and freedom of expression.

But this is 2008 and, through the power of the internet, an international campaign formed around Fouad's case. First there was the official web site, www.HelpFouad.com with an e-petition asking for Fouad's release. Then there was the Facebook group, Help Fouad Mourtada.

Through the Facebook group and offline social networks, rallies were organized this past Saturday (March 1) at Moroccan embassies and consulates in 8 cities around the world (Rabat, Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, Washington DC, Montreal, Madrid, and London). Digital video and photographs were collected from these rallies made into a video to promote the cause (see above).

Fouad's appeal has not yet been heard in court and there is still time for his sentence to be reversed or reduced. Please get involved with the campaign by joining the Help Fouad Mourtada Facebook group or e-mailing helpfouad AT gmail.com .
