I've never written a post about my goals as an activist, so if I sound foolishly idealistic please forgive me. I am interested in digital activism because I think it has the potential to change the world. But what kind of change am I interested in? What is the end goal of all this activism?
In short, I want to live in a society where people can live the lives they choose, not the lives that are dictated to them by circumstances of birth, ethnicity, social class, or gender. This is a simple humanist vision, yet we have not yet achieved it. Digital activism gives people an equal voice, by lowering the bar to idea dissemination and organizing to a level that is accessible to a broader swath of the human population. With millions of people acting to change the world, change can happen much more quickly than if change is left in the hands of a few "leaders."
I also want a world where we care more about each other, where we aren't so set on assuring our own success that we have no time to look up and help a fellow man. When a very few people are rich and rapidly getting richer and most people are poor with no hopes of improving their situation, that is a system that is not working, from a simple ethical standpoint. Digital activism helps people connect woth each other, even though they may be separated by thousands of miles and living very different lives.
I am looking for a new world system because what we have now is not working for most of the human race.
