Nobody for President

Posted by Mary on 19/08/2007 at 12:35

It's not even 2008 yet and already I'm disillusioned with every presidential candidate. But, thanks to Facebook, I've found a new candidate I can get behind: Nobody.

According to the Nobody for President group page on Facebook, Nobody will end the war in Iraq, Nobody will clean up George Bush's mess, Nobody will fix the education system, Nobody will make us energy independent, Nobody will protect us against terrorist threats, and Nobody will restore ethical behavior to the White House. Sounds like a great candidate. I'm in.

I wasn't always this cynical. In 1999 and 2000 I actually spent several months volunteering for Democratic hopeful Bill Bradley. I knew he couldn't win. He didn't have charisma and he didn't know how to give a rousing speech but he was a good man. He had integrity and he wanted what was best for the country and it was great to be part of his campaign.

I don't think I've ever been so dispondent about a presidential race so early on. Even candidates I was excited about a few months ago - Hillary the first woman president, Obama the first black president and a true idealist, McCain the maverick president - I am now really disillusioned with. Hillary is power-hungry. McCain is getting it all wrong in Iraq. Obama went from the-next-Kennedy to just-another-candidate. They all pander to special interests and spend as much time fund-raising as campaigning.

I want a candidate I can get behind and it's not too late. We still have a year left. Won't somebody come forward to replace Nobody?

I've always wanted to see "all of the above" ("I'm happy with things and would be content with any of them") and, more particularly, "none of the above", on political ballots. Not that they'd influence the outcome, but as a firm measure of showing contentment levels.

Of course, the reason this will never happen is that establishment politicians really *don't* want to see how many people don't like them... "none of the above" is a general insult to *everyone* running.

Which, frankly, I think they deserve.
