Going on Hiatus for Obama New Media

Posted by Mary on 04/07/2008 at 14:06

believe_preview-gray.jpg

I will not be writing on this blog for a while. The reason is that I have accepted the position of New Media Operations Manager at Obama for America. In this position I will be assisting the Director and Deputy Director of New Media with project management and doing logistics work for the department.

Part of the hiring agreement was that I not maintain a personal blog while I am working at the campaign (not that I will have any time to blog anyway). So, happy Independence Day and see you on November 5th. In the mean

Young Political Junkies Are the New Filter

Posted by Mary on 28/03/2008 at 10:15

Interesting insight from the New York Times on how young voters are active disseminators of political news, not just passive consumers of it:

According to interviews and recent surveys, younger voters tend to be not just consumers of news and current events but conduits as well — sending out e-mailed links and videos to friends and their social networks. And in turn, they rely on friends and online connections for news to come to them. In essence, they are replacing the professional filter — reading The Washington Post, clicking on CNN.com — with a social one. Read more....

What Happened in Texas?

Posted by Mary on 05/03/2008 at 13:48

I'm really upset about what happened in Texas and I keep asking myself why.  I've been looking for explanations of how Hillary won and I've found a good analysis from the Dallas Morning News.  It constrasts Hillary's top-down strategy, which rested on old political connections to the political elite, to Obama's grassroots organizing strategy.

AUSTIN – The Democratic presidential candidates are similar on most policy issues but could not have been more different when it came to courting voters.

A year ago, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton had a deep cache of allies in political officialdom to pave the way,

1 Million Micro-Donations for Obama

Posted by Mary on 26/02/2008 at 18:27

So Larry Lessig has decided not to run for Congress.  Now all of us socially-progressive geeks can put our full energy into Barack Obama.

Obama has done a great job of drawing his financial support many micro-donations collected online rather than relying on a few welathy donors as Hillary has.  This new and more distributed model of fundraising was first successfully applied by the Howard Dean campaign in 2004 and has big implications.  Ideally, collecting money from thousands of ordinary Americans instrad of a few rich people means that the candidate becomes accountable to the broad public, not a

Why I Support Barack Obama

Posted by Mary on 15/02/2008 at 20:54

I first became interested in politics through a civics class in my New Jersey high school. I learned that there are institutions in America that allow ordinary citizens to have a say in the direction of their country, fighting injustice, and having a positive presence in the world.

I volunteered for my first Democratic presidential campaign when I was a senior in high school. While my candidate, Bill Bradley, didn't win the nomination, I loved working for his campaign. I felt that I was part of a movement greater than myself, surrounded by idealists who wanted to make America a

Obama's 8-point win in Iowa has made me excited and optimistic about US politics for the first time in a long time.
